Continuing the third installment of Experienced Insights, NMBL Strategies’ asked our AEC and Design experts another small business-related question to help leaders navigate the COVID-19 pandemic. In our second question, we asked the experts what they think is something that small businesses should not be doing during the COVID-19 pandemic. By having an understanding of what to avoid, businesses can keep from falling behind by avoiding mistakes and focusing on strategies to improve. Here’s what they had to say:

What's one thing you think small businesses should not be doing during COVID?

“Assuming change is not necessary and that we will all return to how it was before COVID.”

- Brian Henn, Pacific Studios

“Don't become a hermit, this COVID stuff isn't going away soon and is changing the future so get involved and talk to new audiences out there.”

- Bill Haley, HSD

“Reaching too far with their growth or stepping outside of the things that make them great. With a market where large companies are starting to struggle in their sustainment of reach, it's important to remain true to principles. Not every void needs to be filled.”

- Michael Friebele, CRTKL

“Looking to get business back to "normal." This is an opportunity to change a paradigm to work better in the future, now is the time to innovate.”

- Joel Fuoss, Trivers

“Don't lose hope, stay focused, and do not ignore safety guidelines - serve as an example.”

- Jim Hill, Sterling Project Development

Offering several great pieces of advice, our experts point small businesses in the right direction by sharing what is detrimental to their success. Three experts agreed that ignoring change and shutting down rather than being proactive is the wrong route to take to surviving challenging economic circumstances caused by the pandemic. As the United States has seen, this is a dynamic situation that can rapidly get worse even after improvement. Planning and remaining vigilant is essential to succeeding. Additionally, we learned that venturing out too far in order to reach every corner of the market can be detrimental; this echoes the advice of Yemi Akande-Bartsch, Ph.D to stay in your lane found in our earlier installment of Experienced Insights. Finally, Jim Hill rounded out this advice with something that applies to everyone everywhere, especially small businesses, to stay hopeful and prioritize safety. With these focus points, small businesses can avoid simple mistakes, and employ successful strategies.
